TROPONIN I

Elevated troponin I indicates heart muscle injury—most commonly a heart attack—but can also occur with myocarditis, heart failure, pulmonary embolism, sepsis, kidney disease, or after intense exercise. A critical troponin result is a cardiac troponin I or T concentration above the assay‑specific 99th percentile upper reference limit, particularly when there is a rising or falling pattern indicating acute myocardial injury. Markedly elevated or rapidly changing troponin levels require urgent clinical assessment and management; exact numeric thresholds depend on the laboratory and assay, so treat reported critical alerts immediately.
