Three common brain scans are CT, MRI, and PET. CT (computed tomography) uses X-rays to create cross-sectional images of brain structure and bleeding. MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) uses magnetic fields and radio waves for detailed soft-tissue and structural imaging. PET (positron emission tomography) uses a radioactive tracer to show metabolic and functional activity, often used to assess tumors, dementia, or epilepsy.

Trodat refers to 99mTc‑TRODAT‑1, a technetium‑99m–labelled radiopharmaceutical that binds dopamine transporters in the striatum. It’s used in SPECT imaging to evaluate presynaptic dopaminergic neuron loss, helping distinguish Parkinsonian syndromes from essential tremor and other movement disorders. It’s administered intravenously for diagnostic imaging, not as a treatment.

Parkinson’s disease is primarily a clinical diagnosis based on symptoms and examination; no single scan definitively confirms it. A dopamine transporter (DAT) SPECT scan (DaTscan) can support diagnosis by showing reduced striatal dopamine-transporter uptake. MRI or CT are used mainly to exclude other causes (strokes, structural lesions). DaTscan cannot always distinguish Parkinson’s from atypical parkinsonism.

A DaTscan is generally not painful. You’ll receive an injection of a radiotracer that may cause a brief sting, warmth, or minor bruising; the imaging itself is painless, though lying still in the camera can be uncomfortable for some. Side effects such as headache, nausea, or mild dizziness are uncommon and short‑lived. Serious reactions are rare; inform staff about allergies or pregnancy.

The best brain scan depends on the clinical question. CT is fastest and excellent for acute trauma and detecting bleeding or fractures. MRI offers superior soft-tissue detail for strokes, tumors, infections and demyelination. MR angiography, CT angiography or digital subtraction angiography evaluate vessels; PET and functional MRI assess metabolism and brain activity. Clinician choice depends on urgency and suspected diagnosis.
