TMT Test

The Trail Making Test (TMT) is a brief neuropsychological test of visual attention, processing speed and executive function. It has two parts: A (connect numbered dots in order) and B (alternate between numbers and letters). Scores reflect completion time and errors; longer times suggest cognitive impairment from dementia, brain injury, or attention disorders. Administration usually takes 5–10 minutes.

Neither is universally better. A resting ECG records heart electrical activity and is ideal for detecting arrhythmias, conduction problems, and acute changes. A treadmill stress test evaluates exercise‑induced ischemia, functional capacity, and uncovers coronary disease not seen at rest. Choice depends on symptoms, risk factors, and the clinical question; clinicians select ECG, TMT, or both as appropriate.

A treadmill (TMT) stress test can suggest coronary artery blockage by showing exercise-induced chest pain, ECG changes, or reduced exercise capacity—signs of possible ischemia. It isn’t definitive: false positives and negatives occur, especially with baseline ECG abnormalities or in women. Abnormal TMT results usually lead to confirmatory imaging (stress imaging, CT angiography) or invasive coronary angiography for diagnosis and treatment planning.

If a treadmill (exercise) test is positive, it suggests reduced blood flow to the heart (possible coronary artery disease). Your doctor will review results, consider further testing (cardiac imaging or coronary angiography), adjust medications, and recommend risk‑factor control and lifestyle changes. Invasive treatments like angioplasty or bypass may be needed depending on severity. Seek urgent care for new or worsening chest pain, fainting, or severe breathlessness.

A normal treadmill (exercise) test is reassuring: it lowers the likelihood of significant obstructive coronary disease and ischemia. However it isn’t definitive—false negatives can occur (especially with baseline ECG changes, medications, or limited exercise capacity). If symptoms persist or risk factors are high, your doctor may recommend further testing (stress imaging, CT coronary angiography) and specialist follow-up.

A chemical (pharmacologic) stress test is usually not very painful. You may feel flushing, chest tightness, shortness of breath, palpitations, nausea, dizziness or mild injection-site discomfort; these symptoms are typically brief and ease once the drug stops or an antidote is given. Serious complications are rare, and monitoring during the test allows quick treatment if needed.
