Smear for Malignant Cells

A smear (Pap) test screens cervical cells for abnormal or precancerous changes and can detect some early cancerous cells. It’s mainly aimed at cervical disease often caused by HPV, not other gynecological cancers. Results can be false negative or positive, so abnormal smears usually need HPV testing, colposcopy and biopsy to confirm diagnosis. Regular screening improves detection and outcomes.

A Pap smear is usually quick and causes only mild discomfort or pressure; many people feel a brief pinch or cramp when the speculum is inserted or when cells are collected. Some experience light spotting afterward. Pain varies — it can be more uncomfortable for those with anxiety, vaginal dryness, or pelvic conditions. Communicate with your clinician; relaxation, breathing, and a smaller speculum can help.

Most abnormalities are not cancer; many clear on their own. Treatment may involve monitoring or removing abnormal tissue (e.g., LLETZ/LEEP, cryotherapy). Prompt follow‑up reduces cancer risk.

In India, a Pap smear usually costs between INR 300 and INR 2,000. Public hospitals and government screening camps may offer it free or at nominal fees (around INR 100–500). Private clinics and diagnostic labs typically charge more (roughly INR 800–2,000), with prices varying by city, facility, and whether additional tests such as HPV testing or cytology review are included.
