Serology Profile

A serology profile is a blood test panel that detects antibodies (and sometimes antigens) to identify current or past infections and assess immune status. It typically measures antibody types (IgM for recent infection, IgG for past infection or immunity) and titres. Clinicians use serology for infections, vaccine response, and autoimmune screening; results must be interpreted with timing, clinical context, and test limitations in mind.

In India, serology (antibody) testing costs vary by provider and test type. Public hospitals and government camps often offer free or subsidized testing. Private diagnostic labs typically charge around ₹400–₹2,000 for standard antibody assays. More specialized quantitative or neutralizing-antibody tests can cost higher, sometimes up to ₹2,500–₹3,000 depending on the laboratory and test method.

A positive serology result means antibodies to the tested pathogen were detected, indicating prior exposure or vaccination. It does not prove current active infection and doesn’t always guarantee protective or long-lasting immunity. Results need clinical correlation and sometimes confirmatory testing, because false positives or cross‑reactivity can occur. Serology is called that because it studies serum—the clear fluid part of blood—and the antibodies, antigens, and immune reactions found there. The suffix “-logy” means “study of,” so serology literally means “study of serum.” It grew from lab methods using serum to detect immune responses for diagnosing infections, autoimmune diseases, and blood compatibility.

Serology detects antibodies or antigens to diagnose infections and some immune conditions. Commonly identified diseases include HIV, hepatitis B and C, syphilis, COVID‑19, rubella, measles, mumps, varicella, Epstein–Barr and cytomegalovirus, toxoplasmosis, Lyme disease and dengue. Serologic tests are also used in autoimmune disorders (e.g., rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus) to detect autoantibodies.

Serology includes multiple test types rather than a single fixed number. Common methods are ELISA, chemiluminescent immunoassays (CLIA), rapid lateral‑flow tests, agglutination, complement‑fixation, neutralization assays, indirect immunofluorescence and Western blot — about eight major categories. Tests detect antibody classes (IgM, IgG, IgA) or antigens; exact panels vary by lab and purpose.
