Samarium Therapy

Samarium (specifically the radioactive isotope samarium-153 EDTMP) is used to relieve bone pain from metastatic cancer, especially osteoblastic bone metastases (commonly from prostate and breast cancer). It preferentially localizes to areas of increased bone turnover and delivers targeted beta radiation, reducing pain for weeks to months. It’s a palliative treatment, not curative, for widespread or refractory bone pain.

Samarium is most commonly used in medicine as the radioactive isotope samarium‑153 bound to EDTMP as a palliative treatment to relieve bone pain from metastatic cancer; it targets bone lesions and delivers localized radiation. Outside healthcare, samarium is used industrially in high‑performance samarium‑cobalt permanent magnets, electronic components, neutron‑absorbing control rods, and specialty alloys for aerospace and electronics.

Treatment addresses multiple skeletal lesions; blood counts are monitored due to possible marrow suppression.

Samarium is important because its alloys produce stable, high-performance permanent magnets (samarium–cobalt) used in motors, turbines and precision electronics. Its isotopes are applied in medicine (samarium‑153 for bone pain relief) and act as neutron absorbers in reactors. Samarium is also used in catalysts, glass/ceramics and specialty lasers. Its rare supply and unique magnetic and nuclear properties make it strategically valuable for clean energy, defense and healthcare.

Samarium isn’t a dietary nutrient but occurs in trace amounts in foods via soil and water uptake. Very low concentrations have been detected in seafood (fish, shellfish, seaweed), grains, leafy and root vegetables, nuts, dairy and meat—levels vary with local geology and contamination. Typical dietary exposure is negligible and not considered nutritionally relevant.
