Resting Myocardial Perfusion Scan

A myocardial perfusion rest test is a noninvasive nuclear scan that images blood flow to the heart muscle while the patient is at rest. After injection of a small radioactive tracer, a gamma camera/SPECT captures images to identify areas of poor perfusion caused by prior heart attack or ongoing ischemia. It helps evaluate coronary artery disease and myocardial viability with minimal discomfort and low risk.

A myocardial perfusion (nuclear stress) scan typically costs widely depending on country and insurance. In the US expect roughly $1,000–$5,000 billed (out‑of‑pocket or copay usually lower with insurance). In private UK clinics about £400–£1,000 (free on the NHS). In India private charges commonly range ₹3,000–₹15,000. Final cost depends on facility, test type and coverage.

Resting and exercise stress tests are recommended for people with new or worsening chest pain, unexplained breathlessness, suspected coronary artery disease, abnormal resting ECG, or irregular heartbeats. They’re used after a heart attack, to assess exercise capacity, evaluate treatment response, or before high‑risk surgery. Patients who can’t exercise may get pharmacologic stress testing. So the active scan portion is roughly 30–60 minutes. Including preparation and paperwork, expect to be at the clinic for about 1–2 hours. If paired with a stress study, the whole appointment can take several hours.

If a nuclear stress test shows a blockage (a reversible perfusion defect or large area at risk), doctors usually confirm severity with coronary angiography and may recommend revascularization (angioplasty/stent or bypass) if significant. Urgent hospitalization can occur for high‑risk findings. For milder defects, clinicians typically optimize medications (antiplatelets, statins, beta‑blockers), advise lifestyle changes, and arrange follow‑up or specialist care.
