Renal Artery Bilateral Color Doppler

A color Doppler renal artery test is a noninvasive ultrasound that maps blood flow in the kidneys’ arteries using color-coded Doppler imaging. It evaluates flow direction, velocity and waveforms to detect narrowing, blockages or altered perfusion (e.g., renal artery stenosis) and assess resistive index. It's used for unexplained high blood pressure, kidney dysfunction or transplant evaluation; no radiation, often outpatient and painless.

A renal artery Doppler on both sides is a noninvasive ultrasound test that uses color and spectral Doppler to evaluate blood flow in the left and right renal arteries. It measures flow velocities, peak systolic velocity and resistive index to detect narrowing, blockages or reduced kidney perfusion—useful for diagnosing renal artery stenosis, renovascular hypertension, and assessing transplanted kidneys.

Normal renal artery Doppler values: intrarenal resistive index (RI) typically 0.47–0.70 (generally <0.70), pulsatility index (PI) usually <1.5, main renal artery peak systolic velocity (PSV) generally <180 cm/s, and renal-to-aortic ratio (RAR) <3.5. Values above these thresholds suggest possible stenosis or parenchymal disease and require clinical correlation and further evaluation.

A renal artery Doppler is a noninvasive ultrasound test to assess blood flow in the renal arteries. It’s used when renovascular hypertension or renal artery stenosis is suspected, with high blood pressure resistant to treatment, unexplained kidney function decline, an abdominal bruit, or asymmetric kidney size. It’s also used for pre- and post‑transplant or post‑angioplasty surveillance to check artery patency.

A renal Doppler ultrasound is non-invasive and generally painless. You may feel mild pressure or brief discomfort when the technician presses the transducer over your abdomen or flank, and the gel can feel cold. It doesn’t involve needles or radiation and usually requires no recovery time. If you have recent surgery, severe tenderness, or anxiety, you may experience more discomfort—tell the sonographer.

Color Doppler ultrasound visualizes blood flow within vessels and the heart by overlaying color on grayscale images to show flow direction and relative velocity. It helps detect blockages, narrowing, clots, abnormal shunts, valve regurgitation, and turbulent flow, and assesses fetal circulation. Clinically it guides diagnosis and monitoring of vascular disease, cardiac function, and interventional procedures.
