Pure Tone Audiometry (PTA)

PTA (Pure Tone Average) in audiometry is the average of hearing thresholds at key speech frequencies—typically 500, 1,000 and 2,000 Hz—measured in decibels (dB). It summarizes the degree of hearing loss, helps classify severity, guides diagnosis and treatment decisions, and monitors changes over time. Some clinicians include 3,000 or 4,000 Hz for specific assessments; lower PTA indicates better hearing.
