A nerve conduction study of both lower limbs measures how well peripheral nerves transmit electrical signals. Small electrical pulses stimulate specific nerves while recordings from muscles or surface sensors quantify signal speed and strength. It helps diagnose neuropathy, entrapment, or nerve injury. The procedure causes mild tingling or discomfort, takes about 30–90 minutes for both legs, and is generally safe and noninvasive.

Neuropathy of the lateral femoral cutaneous nerve (LFCN), called meralgia paresthetica, causes burning, tingling, numbness or pain over the outer thigh. It arises from nerve compression or injury—often due to tight clothing, obesity, pregnancy, diabetes, or surgery. Diagnosis is clinical, sometimes with nerve studies. Treatment is usually conservative: weight loss, loose clothing, pain-relief or neuropathic medications, topical agents, steroid injections; surgery if persistent.

A femoral nerve conduction test measures how fast and how strongly electrical signals travel along the femoral nerve to the quadriceps. Surface electrodes deliver small shocks and record motor responses, assessing nerve injury, neuropathy, entrapment, or lumbosacral plexus problems causing thigh weakness or numbness. The test is minimally invasive, may cause brief discomfort, and is often done with needle EMG to localize and grade severity.

The lateral femoral cutaneous (LFCN) nerve is a purely sensory branch of the lumbar plexus (L2–L3) that supplies skin over the anterolateral thigh. It travels across the iliacus and passes under or through the inguinal ligament near the anterior superior iliac spine. Entrapment (meralgia paresthetica) causes numbness, burning, tingling, or pain on the lateral thigh.

Nerve conduction studies cost widely varies by country and setting. In India private clinics typically charge about ₹1,000–₹5,000. In the UK they’re free on the NHS but private tests often run £150–£600. In the US outpatient charges generally range roughly $200–$1,500 (combined EMG and NCS can be higher, sometimes up to $3,000). Costs depend on facility, specialist fees and tests included.

Peripheral nerve damage can often be repaired: peripheral nerves regenerate slowly (about 1–3 mm per day), and outcomes improve with early microsurgical repair, nerve grafting or decompression plus physiotherapy, pain control and occupational therapy. In contrast, central nervous system (brain, spinal cord) nerve damage has very limited natural repair; treatments focus on rehabilitation and symptomatic management while research explores regenerative therapies.
