MRI of the neck visualizes soft tissues, bones and neurovascular structures. It detects intervertebral disc herniation, spinal canal stenosis, spinal cord or nerve-root compression, cord lesions (eg, demyelination), tumors or metastases, infections or abscesses, inflammatory changes, enlarged lymph nodes, salivary or thyroid gland masses, vascular abnormalities and congenital anomalies. It also assesses trauma, degenerative change and postoperative complications.

An MRI of the neck is generally painless and noninvasive. You may feel discomfort from lying still, noise, a tight space, or existing neck pain worsening. If contrast dye is used, you might feel a brief sting or warmth at the injection site. Claustrophobia or anxiety can be eased with ear protection, cushions, communication with staff, or mild sedation if needed.

Public health systems may cover an MRI, while private cervical‑spine MRI for neck pain typically costs about £150–£500 in the UK, $400–$3,000 (commonly $1,000–$2,000) in the US, and roughly ₹2,000–₹8,000 in India. Most people need no recovery time after a neck MRI and can resume normal activities immediately. The scan itself usually takes about 15–60 minutes. If intravenous contrast is given, you may be observed for 15–30 minutes. If sedation is used for anxiety or claustrophobia, allow several hours to recover and arrange a driver. Minor injection-site soreness or bruising can occur.

Yes. A neck MRI can visualize the thyroid gland—showing size, shape and masses—and help assess retrosternal extension or invasion into nearby structures. However, ultrasound is the first-line test for detecting and characterizing nodules and calcifications. MRI is used when ultrasound is limited (large goiters, substernal disease, staging or surgical planning). MRI does not assess thyroid function.

A neck (cervical) MRI can identify structural causes of nerve injury—herniated discs, spinal stenosis, foraminal narrowing, nerve-root compression, cord lesions, or nerve swelling (with MR neurography or contrast). However, MRI shows anatomy, not nerve function, so it cannot reliably measure microscopic or conduction deficits. Electrophysiological tests (EMG/NCS) and clinical exam are often needed to confirm functional nerve damage.
