MRI of the thigh provides detailed images of bones (femur), muscles, tendons, ligaments, cartilage, joints, blood vessels, nerves and fat. It detects muscle tears, strains, contusions, tendon injuries, ligament and cartilage damage, bone marrow abnormalities, stress fractures, infections, abscesses, tumors and hematomas, and shows inflammation, edema and vascular or nerve compression.

An MRI scan with contrast uses an injected dye (usually a gadolinium-based agent) to enhance image detail. It improves visualization of blood vessels, tumors, inflammation, and abnormal tissue by altering MRI signal characteristics. Contrast helps doctors distinguish normal from diseased tissue and assess blood flow. It’s generally safe but may be avoided or used cautiously in people with severe kidney problems or a history of allergic reactions.

An MRI of the thigh usually takes about 20–40 minutes of scanning time. Including patient setup, positioning and localizer sequences, the whole appointment typically lasts 30–60 minutes. If intravenous contrast is needed, add about 10–20 minutes for injection and extra imaging. Actual time varies with the specific exam, number of sequences and any patient movement requiring repeats.

A thigh MRI typically costs between $400–$3,000 in the United States (higher for contrast or hospital settings), £200–£500 privately in the UK (NHS-covered for eligible patients), and ₹2,500–₹15,000 in India. Exact price depends on location, facility type (hospital vs imaging center), use of contrast, and whether insurance covers part of the fee.

MRI can show structural causes of leg nerve problems—disc herniation, spinal stenosis, tumors, or nerve swelling with specialized MR neurography—but it usually cannot demonstrate microscopic or functional axonal damage. Electrophysiological tests (EMG and nerve conduction studies) are needed to assess nerve function and quantify damage. MRI is best for anatomy and identifying compressive or inflammatory lesions, not for measuring nerve conduction.

Contrast isn’t always required. Gadolinium is added when better tissue, vascular, tumor, infection or inflammatory detail is needed (e.g., cancer staging, abscess, angiography). It’s avoided or used cautiously in pregnancy and people with severe kidney dysfunction because of rare risks.
