An MRI scan with contrast uses an injected contrast agent (usually gadolinium-based) to enhance imaging details. It improves visualization of blood vessels, inflammation, tumors, and abnormal tissue by highlighting areas with increased blood flow or disrupted barriers. The procedure is non‑ionizing and generally safe, though people with severe kidney problems or prior reactions may need precautions or alternative tests.

A face MRI visualizes soft tissues, muscles, salivary glands, sinuses, orbits and the temporomandibular joints, plus facial bones and cartilage. It detects tumors, cysts, inflammation, infections or abscesses, vascular malformations, nerve lesions (including facial and optic nerves), fractures not seen on X‑ray, and congenital or post‑traumatic changes. It aids surgical planning and guides treatment of unexplained facial pain or swelling.

MRI with contrast improves detection and characterization of tumors, inflammation, infections, vascular abnormalities and blood–brain barrier breakdown, aiding diagnosis when more detail is needed. Non‑contrast MRI is adequate for many routine assessments and avoids contrast risks (allergic reaction, gadolinium deposition; caution in severe kidney disease). Choice depends on the clinical question, patient kidney function, and physician judgment.

An MRI with contrast is generally not painful. The contrast (usually gadolinium) is injected through an IV; you may feel a brief sting or cold sensation, mild warmth, or a metallic taste. Some people have minor injection-site discomfort; allergic reactions are rare. The scan itself is painless, though lying still and the machine noise can be uncomfortable. Report any unusual symptoms to staff.

MRI with contrast usually takes about 30–60 minutes. The actual scan is commonly 20–45 minutes, with contrast injection adding a few minutes for administration and timed imaging phases. Allow extra time for arrival, paperwork and safety checks—total appointment often lasts 45–90 minutes. Focused exams may be shorter, while complex or multiphase studies can take longer.

Most people feel fine after an MRI with contrast. Common, brief reactions include a warm sensation or metallic taste during injection, mild headache, nausea, dizziness, or injection-site pain or bruising. Mild allergic symptoms (rash, itching) can occur; severe reactions (breathing difficulty, swelling) are rare. If you have kidney disease, tell your provider. Drink plenty of water and seek care for worrying or persistent symptoms.
