MRI Scan cervical spine

An MRI of the cervical spine provides detailed images of the neck’s vertebrae, intervertebral discs, spinal cord and nerve roots, plus surrounding ligaments and soft tissues. It detects disc herniations, spinal stenosis, cord compression or signal changes (myelopathy), tumors, infections, fractures, degenerative and post‑surgical changes. It’s used to evaluate neck pain, radiculopathy, numbness, weakness or trauma.

A cervical spine MRI typically takes about 20–45 minutes. Actual time depends on the number and type of imaging sequences, whether contrast dye is needed (which adds time for injection and monitoring), and patient movement or positioning. Including prep and paperwork, expect a total visit of roughly 30–60 minutes. Longer or combined spine studies can take more time.

MRI cervical spine costs vary by country, facility and whether contrast is used. Rough estimates: in India about ₹2,000–₹8,000 at private centers; in the UK scans are free under the NHS but private MRI costs roughly £200–£700; in the US out-of-pocket prices typically range from about $400–$3,500 (often higher for hospital-based scans or with contrast). Check with local providers and insurers.

MRI itself (magnets and radio waves) rarely causes skin rashes. However, gadolinium-based contrast agents can infrequently trigger allergic reactions (hives, rash), and people with severe kidney disease face a rare risk of nephrogenic systemic fibrosis. Contact dermatitis from adhesives, skin prep or warming/cooling pads is also possible. Inform staff of allergies and kidney problems and seek medical attention for any rash.

MRI can visualize neck soft tissues — discs, spinal cord, and nerve roots — and detect causes of nerve injury such as herniated discs, bone spurs, inflammation, cord compression, or swelling. It often shows indirect signs of nerve damage (edema or myelomalacia) but may miss microscopic or purely functional nerve injury. Clinical exam and tests like EMG/nerve conduction studies help confirm nerve function.

A spine MRI can detect disc problems (herniation, degeneration), spinal stenosis and nerve-root or cord compression, fractures, tumours (primary or metastatic) and bone marrow lesions, infections (discitis, osteomyelitis, epidural abscess), inflammatory and demyelinating diseases (e.g., multiple sclerosis, ankylosing spondylitis), congenital or structural deformities (scoliosis), cysts/syrinx, vascular malformations, degenerative facet arthropathy, and postoperative scarring.
