CBCT can be used in diagnosing TMD to evaluate bony structures—condylar morphology, joint space, erosions, osteophytes, fractures, and asymmetry. It does not reliably image the articular disc or soft tissues; MRI remains the gold standard for disc displacement and inflammatory changes. Use CBCT selectively when clinical findings suggest osseous pathology or will alter management, minimizing radiation exposure.

MRI is the imaging modality of choice for temporomandibular disc disorders because it visualizes soft tissues, shows disc position and morphology, joint effusion, and inflammatory changes, and can assess dynamic movement. CT or cone-beam CT are useful for evaluating bony structures but not the disc. Ultrasound has limited sensitivity and is operator-dependent, so it is not preferred for primary disc assessment.

CBCT is superior for evaluating TMJ bony anatomy—condyles, cortical changes, fractures—and provides high-resolution 3D bone detail but uses ionizing radiation and poorly shows soft tissues. MRI is superior for soft-tissue assessment—disc position, joint effusion, inflammation—with no radiation. Which is better depends on the clinical question; clinicians may use one or both to guide diagnosis and treatment.

A sinus CT is optimized for the paranasal sinuses and may incidentally include parts of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), revealing major bony changes. However, it’s not ideal for TMJ diagnosis: CT shows bone but not the disc or soft tissues. For suspected TMJ disorder, dedicated TMJ imaging (cone‑beam/maxillofacial CT for bone, MRI for disc/soft tissue) is recommended.

Prices depend on machine type, field-of-view, radiologist reporting, and whether it's included in a treatment package or covered by insurance. It aids implant planning, assessment of impacted teeth, pathology, orthodontic evaluation and surgical guidance. Scans are quick and provide high-resolution bone detail; radiation dose is generally lower than medical CT but higher than routine dental X-rays.
