Hepatitis B Virus (Qualitative)

A hepatitis B qualitative test detects whether hepatitis B virus markers are present or absent, giving a positive or negative result rather than measuring viral amount. Common qualitative tests identify HBsAg, HBV DNA, or anti-HBc IgM to detect current or recent infection. It’s used for screening and diagnosis; a positive result leads to confirmatory and quantitative testing to assess disease stage and treatment need.

A qualitative test for HBV detects whether hepatitis B virus markers are present or absent—most commonly HBsAg or qualitative HBV DNA by PCR. Results are reported as reactive/non-reactive (positive/negative) and are used for screening and initial diagnosis. It does not measure viral load; if positive, clinicians order quantitative HBV DNA, liver function tests, and additional serology to guide management.

A quantitative test for hepatitis B measures the amount of virus or viral markers in blood. Results are "Reactive/Positive"—indicating current hepatitis B infection (acute or chronic) and needing further evaluation—or "Non‑reactive/Negative"—no detectable surface antigen, suggesting no active infection (though early window period or very low levels can cause false negatives). Occasionally results may be indeterminate.

Hep B quantitative refers to a lab test that measures the amount of hepatitis B virus (HBV) DNA in the blood, usually reported in IU/mL. It quantifies viral replication to assess infection activity, guide treatment decisions, and monitor response to antiviral therapy or relapse. Unlike qualitative or antibody tests, it provides a numeric viral load; higher values indicate more active replication and greater transmissibility.

Qualitative hepatitis tests detect whether viral markers (antigen, antibodies, or viral RNA/DNA) are present — used for diagnosis and screening.
