HCV-RNA Quantitative

HCV RNA quantitative measures the amount of hepatitis C virus genetic material (RNA) in blood, reported as viral load (IU/mL). Performed by PCR, it distinguishes active infection from past exposure, guides treatment selection and duration, and monitors response to therapy. An undetectable result after treatment indicates virologic cure; detectable levels signal ongoing infection or relapse.

A positive HCV RNA means active hepatitis C infection. You should see a specialist for baseline tests (ALT, viral load, genotype, liver fibrosis assessment) and prompt initiation of direct‑acting antiviral therapy, which commonly cures infection. Also get counseling on transmission prevention, avoid alcohol, ensure hepatitis A/B vaccination if susceptible, and confirm cure by undetectable HCV RNA 12 weeks after treatment (SVR12).

Cost varies by country and lab: in the United States an HCV RNA quantitative (PCR) test typically ranges about $100–$500; in the United Kingdom private tests often cost roughly £50–£200 while the NHS covers testing for eligible patients; in India prices commonly fall around ₹1,500–₹6,000. Actual cost depends on the laboratory, test platform, and whether insurance or public health services cover it.

HCV refers to the hepatitis C virus—the pathogen or the infection itself. HCV RNA is the virus’s genetic material detected by nucleic acid (PCR) testing. Detectable HCV RNA means active viral replication and current infection; its level (viral load) helps guide treatment. Antibody tests show past exposure but cannot confirm whether infection is ongoing—only RNA testing does.

Yes — hepatitis C can be cured in most people using modern direct‑acting antiviral (DAA) medicines. Cure means sustained virologic response (undetectable virus) 12 weeks after finishing treatment; cure rates exceed 95% for typical 8–12 week regimens across genotypes. Treatment prevents further liver damage, though existing cirrhosis may need lifelong monitoring. Reinfection is possible, so risk reduction and follow‑up remain important.

HCV quantitative measures hepatitis C RNA in IU/mL. A "normal" (negative) result is undetectable—below the assay’s lower limit (commonly ≈15 IU/mL). Detectable viral loads may range from a few hundred to >10^7–10^8 IU/mL. Clinically, the treatment goal is achieving sustained virologic response (undetectable HCV RNA) at ≥12 weeks post‑therapy. Lab-specific cutoffs vary.
