What is a Growth Hormone (GH) Test?

The Growth Hormone (GH) test measures the amount of human growth hormone in your blood. GH helps children grow and helps adults keep healthy bones, muscle, and normal metabolism. Measuring GH can detect too little hormone (causing slow growth or low energy) or too much (causing enlarged features or other health problems). Doctors use GH with other tests like IGF‑1, and may use stimulation or suppression tests and imaging to diagnose and monitor pituitary conditions and guide treatment.

What does growth hormone GH do?plus

Growth hormone (GH) stimulates linear growth in children by promoting bone and cartilage growth and increases muscle mass through protein synthesis. It raises liver production of IGF‑1, boosts fat breakdown, and alters glucose metabolism (raising blood sugar and reducing insulin sensitivity). GH supports tissue repair, maintains bone density, and influences body composition, metabolism and cardiovascular function throughout life.

What happens when GH levels are high?plus

Excess growth hormone (GH) raises IGF‑1 and causes abnormal tissue growth: in children it causes gigantism, in adults acromegaly. Symptoms include enlarged hands/feet and facial bones, joint pain, carpal tunnel, organ enlargement, and metabolic effects such as insulin resistance, diabetes, hypertension and increased cardiovascular risk. Sleep apnea, fatigue and arthropathy with reduced life expectancy can occur if untreated.

How to increase growth hormone GH?plus

You can boost natural growth hormone by doing regular high-intensity interval and resistance training, getting 7–9 hours of quality sleep on a consistent schedule, maintaining healthy body weight and lower body fat, eating protein-rich meals and timing carbs, reducing added sugars and alcohol, managing stress, and considering intermittent fasting. If deficiency is suspected, consult a doctor for evaluation and possible medical treatment.

Where is GH produced?plus

Growth hormone (GH) is mainly produced by somatotroph cells in the anterior pituitary gland. Its secretion is regulated by the hypothalamus via growth hormone–releasing hormone (GHRH) and somatostatin, and is influenced by sleep, exercise, nutrition, and stress. During pregnancy the placenta secretes a placental GH variant; small amounts may also be produced locally by some peripheral tissues.

What happens if GH is low?plus

If growth hormone (GH) is low, children may have slowed linear growth and short stature. In adults, deficiency often causes reduced muscle mass and strength, increased fat (especially abdominal), decreased bone density and higher fracture risk, low energy, poor exercise tolerance, unfavorable lipid profile, and impaired quality of life with mood and cognitive changes. Severe deficiency in infants can cause hypoglycemia.

Which food provides HGH?plus

No foods directly provide human growth hormone (HGH). HGH is produced by your pituitary gland. Certain foods and nutrients can support natural HGH release: high‑protein options rich in amino acids (eggs, lean meat, fish, dairy, legumes), arginine- or glutamine-containing foods (nuts, seeds, beans), and melatonin-promoting foods like tart cherries. Avoid high-sugar meals before sleep and combine diet with exercise and good sleep.
