GMS Stain

PAS (Patient Assistance Scheme) are programs—often run by drug companies or health services—that provide free or discounted medicines and support to eligible low‑income or uninsured patients after application and verification. GMS (General Medical Services) is a public primary‑care scheme/contract that gives eligible people (means‑tested or specific groups) free or subsidised GP care and prescriptions, usually via a GMS card.

GMS (Gomori methenamine silver) is a special histology stain used to detect fungal organisms in tissue samples. It stains fungal cell walls black against a pale background, helping identify Candida, Aspergillus, Cryptococcus and Pneumocystis jirovecii. It can also highlight certain filamentous bacteria (e.g., Nocardia) and other organisms that are difficult to see with routine stains.

GMS (Gomori methenamine silver) stain is a histologic silver stain used to detect fungal organisms in tissue. It highlights fungal cell walls as black or dark brown against a pale background, making mucormycosis’ broad, non-septate, ribbon‑like hyphae with irregular or right‑angle branching readily visible. It’s routinely used on biopsy specimens to confirm invasive mucormycosis.

AFB (acid‑fast bacilli) and GMS (Gomori methenamine silver) are special microbiologic/histologic stains. AFB stains (e.g., Ziehl–Neelsen) detect acid‑fast organisms like Mycobacterium tuberculosis, showing red bacilli on a blue background. GMS highlights fungal organisms and some pathogens (e.g., Pneumocystis, Aspergillus) as black on a green background. Both are used on sputum, BAL, and tissue for diagnosis.

The Gomori methenamine silver (GMS) stain is used in histopathology to detect fungal organisms and certain other microorganisms in tissue. It stains polysaccharide-rich cell walls black against a contrasting background, making fungi (e.g., Pneumocystis jirovecii, Candida, Aspergillus, Histoplasma) readily visible. It can also highlight some bacteria and microbial elements, aiding diagnosis of invasive infections.

PAS (Periodic Acid–Schiff) stain highlights carbohydrates in tissues—glycogen, mucins, glycoproteins and basement membranes. It’s used to detect fungal cell walls, certain microorganisms, and mucin-producing tumors, and to assess glycogen storage or mucopolysaccharide accumulation. Pathologists use PAS to visualize basement membranes, fungal infections (for example Pneumocystis), and to help classify neoplasms with mucin or glycogen content.
