FLFS stands for Full‑Length Frontal Standing X‑ray. It’s a full‑length radiograph taken with the patient standing in a frontal (anteroposterior) projection to image the entire lower limbs or whole spine under weight‑bearing conditions. FLFS films assess limb alignment, joint orientation and spinal alignment and are commonly used in preoperative planning and deformity evaluation.

A full spine X‑ray is called a full‑length (whole) spine radiograph or spine survey. It images the entire cervical-to-sacral column, typically with standing anteroposterior and lateral views. It’s used to evaluate spinal alignment, scoliosis, kyphosis, trauma, or degenerative changes. Specialized low‑dose systems (EOS) can image the whole spine with reduced radiation, useful for serial monitoring.

Whole-spine X‑ray requires clear indication and informed consent. Prepare the patient by removing metal and positioning upright for AP and lateral views (cervical to sacrum); use a long cassette or digital stitching to capture C1–S1. Ensure collimation, appropriate exposure settings, shielding of gonads, and markers. Ask the patient to stand still, hold normal respiration, and repeat images if alignment or quality is inadequate.

A leg X‑ray is generally called a lower limb X‑ray. Specific names depend on the bones or joints imaged: femur X‑ray, tibia/fibula X‑ray, knee X‑ray (patella), or ankle X‑ray. If the whole leg is imaged it’s often termed a long‑leg or full‑length lower limb radiograph. It’s used to assess fractures, alignment, joint problems, infection, and bone disease.

XRF stands for X‑ray fluorescence. It is a technique in which a material irradiated by primary X‑rays emits characteristic secondary (fluorescent) X‑rays; analysis of these emissions identifies and quantifies elements. In medical and radiology contexts, XRF is used for trace‑element detection, bone and tissue composition studies, and research applications such as monitoring metal‑containing contrast agents or contaminants.

LI-RADS stands for Liver Imaging Reporting and Data System. It is a standardized framework for interpreting and reporting liver imaging—particularly in patients at risk for hepatocellular carcinoma—providing structured categories that reflect the likelihood of benignity versus malignancy. LI-RADS aims to improve consistency in imaging interpretation, guide clinical management, and facilitate communication among clinicians.
