Filaria Antigen Rapid Test

The filaria antigen test is a blood test that detects circulating antigens produced by adult filarial worms (primarily Wuchereria bancrofti). It uses immunoassays (rapid immunochromatographic tests or ELISA) to identify active infection even when microfilariae are absent. It’s used for diagnosing lymphatic filariasis and for programmatic surveillance in endemic areas; results guide treatment and mapping of disease burden.

The rapid card test for filaria is a point-of-care immunochromatographic assay that detects circulating filarial antigen in a finger-prick or venous blood sample, primarily to diagnose lymphatic filariasis. It gives quick results (minutes), useful for mass screening and guiding treatment. While convenient and sensitive for active infection, positive results may require confirmatory testing and clinical correlation before treatment.

Costs vary widely by country and provider. In public health programs the rapid filaria antigen test is often free or subsidized; private labs typically charge about US$5–60 (roughly ₹300–₹5,000 or £10–£60). Procurement prices for test strips are much lower. Check local clinics or labs for exact pricing and whether public services or insurance cover the test.

A positive filarial antibody test indicates the immune system has been exposed to filarial parasites (such as those causing lymphatic filariasis). It does not confirm active infection because antibodies can persist after past or treated infections. Confirmation requires clinical evaluation and further testing—antigen detection, nocturnal blood smears for microfilariae, or molecular tests—before deciding on treatment. Confirm suspected filarial infection by demonstrating the parasite or its antigens: examine a peripheral blood smear taken at night (about 10 pm–2 am) for microfilariae; perform circulating filarial antigen tests or PCR for species identification; use antibody assays if needed. Scrotal ultrasound can show the "filarial dance sign." Peripheral eosinophilia supports the diagnosis. Combine clinical, lab and imaging findings.

Filaria is caused by parasitic filarial worms — mainly Wuchereria bancrofti, Brugia malayi and B. timori — which are transmitted to humans by bites from infected mosquitoes (species vary by region: Culex, Anopheles, Aedes, Mansonia). Mosquitoes act as vectors carrying the parasite’s larvae and transmit the infection only if they have previously fed on an infected person.
