EMG and NCV Both Upper Limbs

The NCV both upper limbs test (nerve conduction velocity) measures how fast and how strongly electrical signals travel along the peripheral nerves of both arms. Surface electrodes deliver mild pulses to motor and sensory nerves to detect slowed conduction or reduced amplitudes, helping diagnose carpal tunnel, ulnar neuropathy, or peripheral neuropathy. It takes ~30–60 minutes, causes brief discomfort, and has minimal risk.

Electromyography (EMG) measures electrical activity in muscles to detect muscle disorders, denervation, and neuromuscular junction problems. Nerve conduction velocity (NCV) tests measure the speed and strength of electrical signals along peripheral nerves to identify nerve damage, compression, demyelination, or axonal loss. Together they distinguish nerve versus muscle causes, localize lesions, and help assess severity and prognosis.

Cost of an EMG/NCV varies by country and setting. It may show spontaneous activity (fibrillations, positive sharp waves) suggesting denervation, and altered motor unit potentials consistent with neuropathic (large, long-duration, polyphasic) or myopathic (small, short-duration) changes. Results help localize lesions, assess severity and chronicity, and guide further testing and treatment.

An NCV (nerve conduction) test typically costs about $200–$1,500 in the United States (depending on facility and whether combined with EMG). In the UK it's free on the NHS but private clinics charge roughly £150–£500. In India prices commonly range ₹500–₹3,000.
