CT Scan Urogram

A CT urogram is a specialized CT scan that uses intravenous contrast to image the kidneys, ureters and bladder in multiple phases. It helps evaluate blood in the urine, stones, tumors, obstruction and congenital anomalies. The test includes non-contrast and contrast phases to assess anatomy and function, requires checking kidney function beforehand, and carries small risks from radiation and contrast reactions.

CT urography is generally not painful. It’s a noninvasive scan requiring you to lie still while X‑rays are taken. Most people only experience brief discomfort from the IV contrast (warmth, metallic taste, or a transient burning sensation) or mild urgency if the bladder is filled. Rare allergic reactions can occur. General anesthesia is usually unnecessary.

A CT urogram typically includes three phases: 1) non‑contrast (unenhanced) — detects calculi and establishes baseline attenuation; 2) nephrographic (contrast‑enhanced, ~80–120 seconds) — optimizes renal parenchyma and tumor detection; 3) excretory (delayed, ~5–15 minutes) — opacifies collecting systems, ureters and bladder to demonstrate urothelial lesions and leaks. These are acquired after IV contrast administration.

A CT urogram usually takes about 30–60 minutes from start to finish. The actual CT image acquisition only takes a few minutes, but preparation (IV contrast setup), contrast injection, and timed multiple-phase/delayed imaging extend the appointment. Allow extra time for registration and brief post-scan observation if contrast was given; total clinic time can occasionally be longer.

If a CT scan shows a serious finding, radiologists notify the treating clinician immediately—often by phone—so action can begin within minutes to an hour. A preliminary read is typically available within an hour for emergency studies; the formal final report usually follows within 24 hours. Outpatient, non‑urgent results can take longer, typically 24–72 hours.

Yes—most centres ask you to fast before a CT urogram. Typically avoid solid food for about 4–6 hours and you may be allowed clear fluids (water) as instructed. Fasting reduces nausea and aspiration risk and helps contrast administration; exact timing varies, and special instructions apply for diabetics or when oral contrast is given. Follow the appointment’s specific pre-scan directions.
