CT Scan Sacro Coccyeal Spine

Costs vary by country and provider. In India a CT scan of the coccyx typically costs about ₹2,000–₹6,000 privately. In the UK public healthcare usually covers it for eligible patients; private scans run roughly £150–£400. In the US out-of-pocket prices commonly range from $300 to $2,000–$3,000 depending on facility, contrast use and insurance coverage. Ask local imaging centers for exact fees.

Yes. A CT scan visualizes the coccyx (tailbone) and nearby bones and soft tissues, producing detailed cross-sectional images that reliably show fractures, dislocations, bone lesions, and surrounding injury. It’s more sensitive than plain X‑ray for complex fractures and surgical planning. For soft-tissue, nerve, or bone‑marrow abnormalities, MRI is usually preferred. Note CT involves ionizing radiation.

MRI is the best scan to evaluate the coccyx because it shows bone‑marrow edema, occult fractures, soft‑tissue injury, infection, and tumors. Plain X‑rays are usually the first‑line test to detect obvious fractures. CT is preferred when detailed bony anatomy or complex fracture assessment is needed. Choice depends on clinical signs and symptom persistence.

Coccygeal vertebrae can develop coccydynia (tailbone pain), fractures or dislocations from falls or childbirth, degenerative joint disease, and rarely infection or tumors. Symptoms include localized pain worsened by sitting, bowel movements, or sexual activity. Risk factors include obesity and prolonged sitting. Treatment ranges from cushions, NSAIDs and physical therapy to steroid injections; refractory severe cases may need coccygectomy.

A general practitioner or primary care doctor usually evaluates tailbone (coccyx) pain first. They may refer to specialists—orthopedic surgeons, spine specialists, or physiatrists (physical medicine and rehabilitation). Pelvic‑floor physical therapists, chiropractors, or pain‑management physicians often provide treatment. If pain persists or imaging is needed, an orthopedic or spine specialist will handle further diagnosis and interventions.

CT scans are excellent for evaluating spinal bones: fractures, alignment, degenerative bone changes, and postsurgical hardware, providing high-resolution detail useful for trauma and surgical planning. However, CT is less effective than MRI for intervertebral discs, spinal cord, and nerve-root compression. CT myelography can assess nerve issues when MRI isn’t possible. CT uses ionizing radiation, so benefits and risks should be weighed.
