A CT of the right elbow is a computed tomography scan that uses X-rays and computer processing to produce detailed cross-sectional images of the elbow’s bones, joint spaces and nearby soft tissues. It helps detect fractures, dislocations, bone lesions, arthritis, and complex injuries or to guide surgical planning. The exam is quick, noninvasive, may use contrast rarely, and involves low to moderate radiation exposure.

A CT scan of the elbow is very quick: the actual image capture usually takes 1 to 5 minutes, though positioning and explanations add time. Expect a total appointment of about 10 to 30 minutes. If contrast is needed or extra imaging is performed, allow additional time for injection, observation, and paperwork, which can extend the visit to 30 to 60 minutes.

For an elbow CT the patient is usually supine with the affected arm extended into the scanner and the elbow joint centered in the gantry. The forearm is supinated (palm-up) and kept straight and immobilized to minimize motion. If full extension is too painful, slight flexion with careful stabilization is acceptable. Technologists adjust to include distal humerus and proximal forearm.

A CT scan can clearly show bone-related joint problems — fractures, bone alignment, osteoarthritis with joint-space narrowing, bone spurs and calcifications — and is useful for surgical planning. However, it’s less accurate than MRI for soft tissues like cartilage, ligaments, tendons, and menisci. CT arthrography with contrast improves cartilage visualization. CT involves ionizing radiation, so discuss risks and benefits with your clinician.

For elbow injuries, choice depends on the suspected problem. CT is superior for detailed bone evaluation, complex fractures and surgical planning. MRI is better for soft tissues—ligaments, tendons, cartilage, bone‑marrow edema and occult fractures—without ionizing radiation. Your clinician will choose based on symptoms, suspected pathology, prior imaging and any implant or safety contraindications.
