CT Scan Mastoid

A mastoid CT scan is a specialized computed tomography study that creates detailed X‑ray images of the mastoid bone and surrounding temporal bone, middle ear and air cells. It's used to diagnose mastoiditis, chronic ear infections, cholesteatoma, fractures or congenital abnormalities. The test is quick, noninvasive and excellent for assessing bony anatomy; it involves low-dose radiation and usually doesn’t require contrast.

A CT scan can detect many inner-ear problems that affect bone, such as temporal bone fractures, congenital malformations and otosclerosis, because CT shows fine bony detail. It is less sensitive for soft-tissue or nerve conditions (for example vestibular schwannoma or labyrinthitis), for which MRI is preferred. Often both CT and MRI are used for complete evaluation.

A CT scan of the mastoids typically costs widely depending on country, facility and insurance. In the US private prices often range roughly $200–$1,200; in the UK it's usually covered by the NHS but private scans can be £100–£400; in India typical private fees run about ₹1,500–₹6,000. Yes — although rare, the mastoid (mastoid bone/air cells behind the ear) can be involved by cancer. Primary temporal bone or mastoid malignancies (e.g., squamous cell carcinoma, primary bone tumors) or spread from nearby skin, parotid, or skull-base cancers may occur. Symptoms include persistent ear discharge, pain, hearing loss, swelling, or facial nerve problems. Diagnosis needs imaging and biopsy; treatment may include surgery, radiotherapy, and chemotherapy.
