CT Scan Jaw

A jaw CT scan provides detailed cross-sectional images of the mandible and maxilla, showing bone structure, tooth roots and alignment, the temporomandibular joints, fractures, cysts or tumors, dental abscesses and osteomyelitis, and sinus involvement. It helps plan dental implants, evaluate trauma, detect foreign bodies, and assess bone density. Contrast-enhanced CT can further evaluate soft-tissue or vascular lesions.

A CBCT scan is generally painless and non‑invasive. You may feel minor discomfort from biting a stabilizing piece, holding still, or head supports; some people feel anxious if claustrophobic. The procedure is quick, requires no recovery or injections, and you won’t feel the X‑ray itself. If you experience pain or significant discomfort, inform the technician so they can adjust positioning.

Yes — a CT scan can detect many jaw infections. It shows bone involvement (osteomyelitis), abscesses, extent of spread, gas, and nearby soft-tissue extension; contrast-enhanced CT helps differentiate abscess from cellulitis. Very early dental infections or pulpitis may be better seen on dental X-rays or cone‑beam CT, and MRI is superior for early marrow or soft-tissue changes. Clinical correlation is needed.
