Yes. A CT IVP (intravenous pyelogram/urogram) uses intravenous iodinated contrast to opacify kidneys, ureters and bladder, often combined with a non-contrast phase for stone evaluation. Patients need assessment of kidney function and allergy history because contrast can cause allergic reactions or worsen renal impairment; hydration and alternative imaging are considered for high‑risk individuals.

An IVP CT scan (CT intravenous pyelogram) is a CT examination using injected iodinated contrast to visualize the kidneys, ureters and bladder. It helps detect stones, tumors, strictures and causes of blood in urine by capturing non‑contrast, nephrographic and excretory phases. Preparation includes kidney‑function blood tests, fasting and hydration. Risks include radiation and contrast reactions; inform staff about pregnancy or kidney disease.

Iodine-based, water-soluble intravenous contrast agents are used for CT scans. Modern agents are non‑ionic, low‑ or iso‑osmolar iodinated compounds (examples: iohexol, iopamidol, iodixanol) that enhance blood vessels and organs and improve lesion detection. They can cause allergic reactions or kidney injury, so renal function and allergy history are checked before administration and hydration may be recommended.

CT IVP can cause mild allergic reactions (nausea, vomiting, itching, hives) and rarely severe anaphylaxis; contrast‑induced kidney injury, especially with preexisting renal disease or diabetes; transient warmth or metallic taste during injection; local problems (pain, swelling, extravasation); and radiation exposure. Less commonly it may affect thyroid function or cause dizziness/headache. Discuss risks and check kidney function beforehand.

CT IVP is not usually painful. You may feel brief discomfort from IV insertion and a short-lived warm or flushed sensation, metallic taste, or mild nausea when contrast is injected. Serious allergic reactions are rare but possible; tell staff about prior contrast allergies, kidney problems, or pregnancy. Discomfort typically passes quickly and staff monitor you during the scan.

Most people do not find CT IV contrast painful. You may feel a brief warm flush, metallic taste, or mild stinging at the injection site as the dye is injected. Significant pain is uncommon; pain and swelling can occur if contrast leaks outside the vein (extravasation). Serious allergic reactions are rare—tell staff about prior reactions so they can take precautions.
