CT Scan Enterography

CT enterography and colonoscopy serve different roles. CT enterography is superior for noninvasive evaluation of small‑bowel disease, extraluminal complications, and assessing extent of Crohn’s disease. Colonoscopy remains the gold standard for direct mucosal visualization, biopsy, and polyp removal in the colon and terminal ileum. One is not universally “better”—choice depends on the clinical question and need for tissue sampling.

Typically CT enterography requires about 1–2 liters (roughly 1,200–1,800 mL) of neutral oral contrast—commonly around 1.5 L—ingested over 45–60 minutes before scanning. Protocols vary by institution and patient size; some centers use 1–2 L over 30–90 minutes or adjust volume for body habitus. If you have swallowing difficulties or heart failure, tell the team.

CT enterography costs vary widely by country and facility: in the US it's commonly around $800–2,500 (can be higher), in the UK it's provided free on the NHS though private scans often cost roughly £200–£700, and in India prices typically range about ₹3,000–15,000. Final price depends on location, hospital type, contrast use, radiologist fees and whether insurance or public coverage applies.

Fast 4–6 hours before the scan. Follow your imaging center’s instructions to drink the prescribed oral contrast solution over about 45–60 minutes to distend the small bowel. You may receive IV contrast—bring recent kidney-function results and report allergies or pregnancy. Stop/metformin per your provider’s advice. Wear loose clothing, remove metal, and bring previous imaging and a medication list.

A CT enterography appointment generally lasts about 60–90 minutes. You’ll spend 45–60 minutes drinking oral contrast and waiting for it to reach the small bowel; the actual CT scan and IV contrast injection take about 10–20 minutes. Expect extra time for registration and IV access, so plan around an hour to an hour and a half for the whole visit.

CT enterography is generally safe and effective for evaluating small-bowel disease but uses ionising radiation and IV iodinated contrast. Risks include radiation exposure, rare allergic reactions, and contrast-related kidney injury; providers check pregnancy status and renal function and apply dose-reduction measures. For patients at higher risk, alternatives such as MR enterography or ultrasound may be preferred.
