What is a Copper Test?
The copper test measures the amount of copper in your blood. Copper is a trace mineral the body needs to make enzymes. It helps with energy production, iron use, brain and nerve function, and connective tissue. Too much copper or too little can cause health problems. The test helps detect conditions like Wilson disease, malnutrition, malabsorption, and some liver disorders. Doctors use it to diagnose problems, monitor treatment, and check people on copper supplements or long-term feeding. Results are often interpreted with other tests, such as ceruloplasmin or urine copper, to get a full picture of copper status.

Why Take a Copper Test?
COPPER is often ordered alone or with ceruloplasmin and urine copper as part of a metabolic or liver panel. Doctors may request it when a patient has fatigue, unexplained liver tests, neurological symptoms, or unusual hair or skin changes. It helps diagnose Wilson disease, copper deficiency, and effects of malabsorption or supplements. Abnormal levels can come from liver disease, genetic conditions, medications, or diet.
