Comprehensive Antenatal Care

Comprehensive antenatal care includes regular scheduled visits with a trained provider for medical assessments (blood pressure, weight, urine, fetal growth), routine screening and tests, immunizations, nutrition and lifestyle counseling, management of chronic or pregnancy-related conditions, mental-health and social support, birth-planning and education about danger signs, and timely referral to specialist care throughout pregnancy.

The comprehensive antenatal care (ANC) package includes regular scheduled visits for maternal and fetal assessments; risk screening (blood pressure, urine, blood tests, glucose, anemia, infections); routine ultrasound monitoring; preventive measures (iron–folic acid, tetanus, malaria prophylaxis where indicated); counseling on nutrition, breastfeeding, birth preparedness, danger signs and family planning; vaccination and management/referral of complications such as preeclampsia, gestational diabetes and HIV.

The five aims of antenatal care are: 1) identify and manage maternal and fetal risks and health problems early; 2) monitor fetal growth, development and maternal health; 3) provide screening, preventive treatments and vaccinations; 4) give information and support on healthy behaviours, nutrition and mental well‑being; 5) prepare women and families for safe labour, delivery, breastfeeding and parenting.

Four antenatal care visits are the minimum routine prenatal appointments to monitor mother and baby, detect complications, and provide preventive care. Typical timing: first in the first trimester (before 12 weeks), second at about 24–28 weeks, third near 32 weeks, and fourth at 36 weeks. Services include exams, weight/BP checks, fetal growth assessment, screening tests, iron/folate, vaccinations, and birth-prep counseling.

The four core components of antenatal care are: 1) clinical assessment and risk identification (history and examinations); 2) screening and diagnostic tests (blood tests, urine tests, ultrasounds); 3) prevention and treatment (immunisations, supplements, management of medical conditions); and 4) health promotion, education and birth preparedness (nutrition, smoking cessation, breastfeeding support and labour planning).

Usually you can take Pregnacare and folic acid together, but many Pregnacare products already contain folic acid. Check the label: routine recommendation is 400 µg (0.4 mg) daily before conception and through early pregnancy; some women need 5 mg on medical advice. Don’t exceed the total advised dose—check with your GP, midwife, or pharmacist before adding extra.
