Chromium - WB EDTA

The WB EDTA test is a whole‑blood sample collected in an EDTA anticoagulant tube for hematology testing. It’s used mainly for a complete blood count (CBC)—haemoglobin, red and white cell counts, platelet count and indices—and for peripheral smear/reticulocyte analysis. It helps diagnose anaemia, infection and clotting disorders and monitor treatment; EDTA preserves cells and prevents clotting for accurate results.

A chromium blood test measures chromium levels in the blood to detect deficiency or toxic exposure. It evaluates nutritional chromium (chromium III) relevant to glucose metabolism and insulin function, and monitors occupational or environmental exposure to toxic chromium (hexavalent) or suspected poisoning. Doctors may order it for unexplained blood sugar control problems, when supplements are used, or after potential industrial exposure.

An EDTA blood test uses an anticoagulant that binds calcium to stop clotting and preserve blood cells. It’s required when your clinician needs accurate complete blood counts, blood smears, platelet and reticulocyte counts, or certain immunology and molecular tests. This helps diagnose or monitor anaemia, infection, bleeding or clotting disorders and assess treatment responses by keeping cell size, shape and counts stable.

"ESR EDTA WB" refers to the erythrocyte sedimentation rate measured on EDTA-anticoagulated whole blood. ESR shows how quickly red blood cells settle in one hour; faster rates can indicate inflammation, infection, autoimmune conditions or malignancy. EDTA prevents clotting and allows some automated testing. Results must be interpreted with age, sex and clinical context because normal ranges vary.

Chromium’s cancer risk depends on its chemical form and exposure route. Hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) is a proven human carcinogen—especially linked to lung cancer from inhalation in occupational settings—and can cause other organ damage with chronic exposure. Trivalent chromium (Cr(III)), the dietary form, has low toxicity and is not considered carcinogenic at normal exposures. Reducing inhalation and using workplace controls is essential.

Signs of chromium deficiency include impaired glucose tolerance and increased insulin resistance causing high blood sugar, stronger carbohydrate cravings and appetite, unexplained weight loss and persistent fatigue, mood changes such as irritability or confusion, and peripheral neuropathy symptoms (numbness, tingling, burning). Deficiency is uncommon but can worsen metabolic control in people with diabetes.
