Chikungunya

Chikungunya’s acute febrile illness usually lasts 3–10 days. Fever and severe joint pain often improve within one to two weeks, but joint stiffness and arthralgia can persist for months in many patients and, in a minority, extend for a year or longer. Recovery varies by age and preexisting conditions; supportive care helps relieve symptoms while the infection runs its course.

Chikungunya primarily targets the joints, causing severe joint pain and swelling, rather than a single internal organ. It also produces fever and muscle pain, and in some cases can affect other organs — notably the liver, eyes, heart and nervous system (brain). Most people recover, though joint symptoms can persist for months or even years in some individuals.

Chikungunya typically causes sudden high fever, intense joint pain (often in hands and feet), and a maculopapular skin rash. Fever starts abruptly; joint pain is often severe, with swelling and stiffness that can be debilitating and may persist for months. The rash commonly appears a few days after fever onset. Other frequent symptoms include headache, muscle pain, nausea and fatigue.

Chikungunya has no specific antiviral cure. Treatment is supportive: rest, fluids, and pain relief (paracetamol/acetaminophen or NSAIDs once dengue is excluded). Severe or persistent joint pain may need stronger analgesics, physical therapy, or short-term steroids. Most recover within days to weeks, but some develop chronic joint pain lasting months to years. Prevention targets mosquito control and bite protection.

Both chikungunya and dengue are mosquito‑borne and can be serious, but they differ. Dengue more often causes high fever, bleeding, plasma leakage, and can be life‑threatening (severe dengue). Chikungunya typically causes very painful acute and often prolonged joint pain and stiffness that can be disabling but is rarely fatal. Management is mainly supportive; prevention focuses on mosquito control and bite avoidance.

There’s no specific cure for chikungunya; home care focuses on symptom relief and preventing complications. Rest, drink plenty of fluids, use paracetamol (acetaminophen) for fever and pain, apply cold compresses to sore joints, and do gentle joint movements as pain improves. Avoid NSAIDs (like ibuprofen) until dengue is excluded. Seek medical help for very high fever, severe/persistent pain, bleeding, dehydration, infants, elderly, or pregnancy, and prevent mosquito bites.
