CD34 Viable Cells

CD34-positive (CD34+) cells carry the CD34 protein on their surface and are primarily hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells, plus some endothelial progenitors. Detecting CD34+ cells shows presence and quantity of cells that can regenerate blood and immune cells, important for stem cell transplants, graft evaluation and monitoring stem cell mobilization. CD34 expression varies; functional capacity is assessed alongside counts.

Stem cell viability refers to the proportion of living, functional stem cells in a sample—cells able to survive, proliferate and differentiate. It’s measured by membrane integrity, metabolic activity and colony-forming ability. High viability is essential for reliable research, transplantation and regenerative therapies, and depends on donor factors, isolation methods, handling, storage and cryopreservation protocols.

A "good" CD34 count depends on context. For peripheral blood mobilization, counts above about 10–20 CD34+ cells/µL are often used to begin apheresis. For transplant graft dose, a minimum of ~2×10^6 CD34+ cells/kg recipient weight is usually required for engraftment, while ~5×10^6/kg is preferred for faster recovery. Consult your transplant team for individualized targets.

Viability depends on stem cell type and storage. Freshly collected cells typically last hours to a few days; refrigerated samples are generally viable 24–72 hours. With proper cryopreservation (liquid nitrogen), stem cells can remain functional for decades—commonly 20+ years—with high post‑thaw recovery. Long‑term success hinges on collection quality, cryoprotectants, storage temperature, and thawing protocol.

CD34 is a cell-surface glycoprotein used to identify hematopoietic stem/progenitor cells and endothelial cells. It is not a specific tumor marker: CD34 is expressed in normal blood-forming and vascular cells and in several tumors (e.g., vascular neoplasms, dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans). Its presence aids diagnosis but must be interpreted with other markers and clinical/pathological context.

CD34 is expressed by hematopoietic progenitors and endothelial cells and is positive in various tumors, notably vascular neoplasms (hemangiomas, angiosarcomas), dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans (strongly CD34+), solitary fibrous tumor, many gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs), spindle cell/pleomorphic lipomas and some other soft‑tissue sarcomas. Immunoprofile must be interpreted with morphology and other markers for accurate diagnosis.
