What is a Blood Grouping (A B O) and Rh Type Test?
This test identifies your ABO blood group (A, B, AB, or O) and your Rh type (positive or negative). Blood group antigens sit on red blood cells and help the immune system tell self from foreign cells. Knowing your blood type is essential for safe blood transfusions and organ transplants. It is also important in pregnancy to prevent Rh incompatibility that can harm the baby. Doctors use this test for routine preoperative checks, antenatal screening, emergency transfusions, and blood donation. It also guides follow-up after transfusion reactions and in newborn care. Results are usually reported clearly as a combined ABO and Rh designation, and they rarely change over a person’s life.
