Anti Streptolysin O (ASO) (rapid)

A positive antistreptolysin O (ASO) test shows past exposure to group A streptococcal infection but is not necessarily serious by itself. High or rising ASO levels, especially with symptoms (fever, sore throat, joint pain, breathlessness, blood in urine), suggest recent infection and raise concern for complications such as rheumatic fever or post-streptococcal glomerulonephritis. Discuss results with your clinician for repeat testing and evaluation.

A high anti-streptolysin O (ASO) titre indicates recent or past infection with group A Streptococcus. Elevated ASO supports but does not prove a streptococcal-triggered illness and is used with symptoms and other tests to diagnose conditions like rheumatic fever or post-streptococcal glomerulonephritis. Levels vary by age, timing and region, so clinical correlation and sometimes repeat testing are required.

Antistreptolysin O (ASO) test detects antibodies against streptolysin O, a toxin produced by group A Streptococcus. ASO positivity indicates recent streptococcal exposure rather than disease; treatment depends on clinical context. Treat active streptococcal infection with penicillin or amoxicillin (macrolide if penicillin‑allergic). If associated with rheumatic fever, add anti‑inflammatory therapy (aspirin or steroids) and long‑term antibiotic prophylaxis. Isolated elevated ASO without symptoms usually needs no specific therapy—monitor and treat only if complications arise.

Risk factors for arteriosclerosis obliterans (ASO) include advancing age, smoking, diabetes mellitus, hypertension, high cholesterol (hyperlipidemia), obesity, sedentary lifestyle, and atherosclerosis. Additional risks are family history, male sex, chronic kidney disease, and peripheral vascular disease. Poorly controlled diabetes and smoking are particularly strong contributors. Early identification and risk-factor modification reduce progression risk.
