ANA PROFILE TEST

An ANA antinuclear antibody profile is a blood test that detects antibodies targeting cell nucleus components. It helps screen for and support diagnosis of autoimmune connective-tissue diseases such as systemic lupus erythematosus, scleroderma, Sjögren’s syndrome and some forms of inflammatory arthritis. Results report titer and staining pattern; positive results prompt further specific antibody testing and clinical correlation, since low-level positives can occur in healthy people.

ANA is usually reported as a titre by indirect immunofluorescence: results below 1:40 are generally considered negative, though some labs use 1:80 as the cutoff, so low titres (1:40–1:80) may be clinically insignificant. ELISA/solid‑phase tests give index values with lab-specific reference ranges. Always use the lab’s reference interval and correlate ANA results with clinical findings.

An ANA profile shows whether antinuclear antibodies are present, the titer and the immunofluorescence pattern. Negative results make systemic autoimmune disease less likely; low titers can be nonspecific, while higher titers (e.g., ≥1:160) are more suggestive of autoimmune conditions. Pattern clues—homogeneous (SLE), speckled (Sjögren’s, SLE), centromere (CREST), nucleolar (scleroderma). Always correlate with symptoms and follow up with specific antibody tests and clinical assessment.
