It is not diagnostic alone—many autoimmune diseases (e.g., lupus, Sjögren’s, scleroderma) can cause a positive result, but infections, medications, or healthy individuals may also test positive. Follow-up testing (confirmatory immunofluorescence and specific autoantibody panels) and clinical correlation with symptoms are required to determine significance.

A positive ANA test alone usually isn't a reason to panic. Many healthy people have a positive ANA, especially at low titers. Doctors interpret the result with your symptoms, titer and pattern, and may order specific antibody tests or refer to a rheumatologist. If you have joint pain, rashes, fatigue or other suggestive symptoms, follow up; if asymptomatic, your doctor may just monitor.

When linked to an autoimmune condition, ANA itself isn’t “curable”—treatment aims to control inflammation and symptoms; some people achieve remission, but many require long-term monitoring and tailored therapy for the underlying illness.
