3D Mammography - Tomosynthesis with Ultrasound

Breast tomosynthesis (3D mammography) gives clearer, layered images that improve cancer detection and reduce overlap-related false positives, especially in dense breasts. Ultrasound complements it by distinguishing solid from cystic lesions, clarifying unclear mammogram findings, evaluating palpable lumps, and guiding biopsies. Together they increase diagnostic accuracy when screening is inconclusive, for high-risk patients, or when symptoms like a lump or localized pain appear.

Tomosynthesis, or 3D mammography, is an advanced breast X-ray that acquires multiple low-dose images from different angles and reconstructs thin cross-sectional slices. By reducing tissue overlap it improves detection of small cancers and clarifies abnormalities, lowering false positives and recall rates. It’s used for screening and diagnosis, typically at radiation doses comparable to standard mammography when combined with synthesized 2D images.

Breast tomosynthesis (3D mammography) uses the same compression as standard mammography, so most people feel pressure or discomfort during the brief exam. Pain varies—some report mild pinching or soreness, others experience more sensitivity depending on breast size, timing in the menstrual cycle, and individual pain threshold. Technologists can adjust compression and positioning; tell them if it’s painful to minimize discomfort.

An ultrasound is used after a 3D mammogram to clarify unclear areas, distinguish fluid-filled cysts from solid masses, and further evaluate abnormalities seen on mammography—especially in dense breast tissue. It helps determine whether a finding is likely benign or needs biopsy, guides needle biopsies, and provides real-time imaging without radiation. This complementary test improves diagnostic accuracy and patient management.

Breast tomosynthesis (3D mammography) disadvantages include a slightly higher radiation dose than standard 2D mammography, higher cost and limited availability, longer acquisition and radiologist interpretation time, and potential for increased false positives, recalls or unnecessary biopsies leading to overdiagnosis and anxiety; long‑term mortality benefit compared with conventional mammography is still under study.

After a 3D mammogram you may receive immediate feedback at the appointment, but the final radiologist report usually takes 24–72 hours. Formal written results are commonly sent within 1–14 days. If additional imaging or biopsy is needed, a recall often happens the same day or within a few days. Contact the clinic if you haven’t heard back within two weeks.
